Port Truck Driver Requirements

Port truck driver jobs do have similar requirements to many other trucking roles. For example, in both cases, you’ll need a CDL-A and a history of safe driving. A current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical is also a necessity and a clean drug screen. Finally, you’ll need to be at least 21 years old, as well as eligible to work in the United States.  

Where things begin to differ is the need for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as a TWIC Card. This ID is issued by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard. 

Getting a TWIC Card means completing an application process and passing an in-depth identity verification and background check. Additionally, you’ll need to pay the required fee. Once you have done that and received your TWIC Card, you can potentially qualify for port truck driver positions. 

However, it’s important to note that some companies do have more stringent experience requirements for TWIC jobs. At times, you might also need additional credentials – like a HAZMAT endorsement – though this isn’t always the case.
