Whether you’re doing temp CDL work or are in a permanent position, setting New Year’s resolutions is a smart move. It lets you choose goals that can boost your career, allowing you to increase productivity, remain safe, and meets your various needs while on the road.
There are plenty of excellent New Year’s resolutions for truck drivers. If you aren’t sure where to begin, here are a few to consider.
Focus on Safety
Truck drivers frequently face hazards while on the job. Since that’s the case, resolving to focus on safety is an excellent choice for the upcoming year. Concentrate on limiting distractions while driving, and commit to always performing your pre-and post-trip inspections. Additionally, make sure you don’t cut corners in the name of saving time.
Keep Connected
Being on the road can get lonely. Since that’s the case, resolving to keep connected with your loved ones is a great way to start the year. Set a schedule with family members and friends to ensure you touch base regularly. Take advantage of Wi-Fi during stops for video calls. Reach out to loved ones you don’t talk to often on occasion, even if it’s just to say “hi.”
Care for Your Eyes
Spending hours on end focused on the road is rough on your eyes. Since that’s the case, committing to an eye care routine is a wonderful New Year’s resolution.
Make sure you’re getting your annual exams to check the health of your eyes and to update your prescription lenses for greater clarity. When it’s bright outside, wear sunglasses to block UV light and make you more comfortable. Also, have eye drops with you to rehydrate your eyes when they get dry.
Get Moving
Driving a truck is a highly sedentary job, so deciding to make physical activity a priority this year is an excellent resolution. Commit to doing stretches every time you stop for breaks or fuel, and do a lap or two around your truck before getting back on the road. When you choose parking spots, select one that’s a little farther out to get some extra steps in as you head inside. At the end of the day, try to walk for at least 15 to 30 minutes. Finally, select a physical activity that you can do on your off days that’s fun, making you more likely to stick with it.
Remember Your Why
Truck drivers can face challenges on the road that make their jobs frustrating. By resolving to remember your “why” this year, you’re more adept at shaking off annoyances. Remind yourself why you enjoy your job, such as your love for big rigs and the open road. That helps you see the positives, making your career more enjoyable.
