Getting your CDL is a big accomplishment. It means you’re ready to hit the road as a professional truck driver, and that’s exciting.  

However, many new CDL drivers face obstacles when trying to snag their first position. When you don’t have any professional experience, some companies may hesitate to bring you on board. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get hired. You simply need to make sure you use the right approach. That way, you can secure a job and start building up your experience.  

If you need to get hired as a truck driver but don’t have any experience, here’s how to pull it off.  

Cast a Wide Net  

When you’re trying to get your first job as a truck driver, it’s partially a numbers game. By applying to a wide variety of carriers, you may increase your odds of landing a position.  

Every resume or application you submit represents an opportunity. By putting yourself out there more, you’re tapping into a larger number. In time, one will pan out.  

Apply to Large Carriers  

While many truck drivers don’t view the giant carriers as their first choice, you need to consider them when you’re first starting out. Since they are so large, they have to maintain massive fleets. As a result, they may be open to giving someone new a chance.  

Explore a Range of Driving Jobs  

Even if you have your eye on driving a tractor-trailer, don’t automatically discard other kinds of driving work. When you’re a new CDL driver, your priority should be gaining driving experience. That way, you can boost your resume, making you a more attractive candidate down the line.  

For example, you might be able to connect with a local highway department, becoming a gravel truck driver. You can also look at delivery truck jobs that don’t involve tractor trailers.  

If your license covers the type of truck listed in a job ad, consider applying. Many of them pay well and will allow you to gain the experience you need.  

Become an Apprentice  

There are a few trucking companies that operate their own apprenticeship-style programs. With these, you’ll work for the company, but much of your initial experience will be focused on learning how the company wants its truckers to drive.  

Essentially, they make the learning practical, focusing on real-world experience, and helping you get the hang of the job. Once you complete the program, you may be able to transition into a traditional role.
